Biography
Christian Houge, born in 1972, is a Norwegian photographer who lives and works in Oslo. He is very involved in the contemporary art scene, and his photography questions the relationship between human beings and nature.
Christian Houge: interactions between nature, culture and technology through images
For more than 25 years, Christian Houge has been questioning the place of Man in his environment. He questions the duality of our relationship with nature, somewhere between symbiosis and confrontation, and seeks to highlight the complex interactions between nature, technology and culture. Drawing on a conceptual approach informed by in-depth research and extensive travel across diverse cultural contexts, his work explores notions of environmental degradation, identity and ritual.
The artist is developing a profound reflection on the Anthropocene, the contemporary geological era shaped by the dominant imprint of human activity on the climate and ecosystems. His visual compositions are striking for the tension they create between captivating beauty and symbols of destruction. Christian Houge invites viewers to contemplate the environment that surrounds them, to consider the future that lies ahead, and to wonder about the imprint that they, in turn, will leave on the Earth.
Working with large-format analogue photography, digital technologies and, more recently, wet collodion – a highly complex 19th-century photographic process that is now rarely used – he considers photography to be both a visual and a philosophical tool. His process frequently incorporates performative gestures, deliberately altering his subjects to express themes such as fragility, decomposition and transformation.
Photography steeped in Nordic myths and folklore
In his Shadow Within series, Christian Houge, like the artist Vincent Munier, has chosen to photograph wolves. The series took him three years to complete and took him from Norway to the United States. With Shadow Within, the contemporary photographer restores the complexity of this animal, which in our collective imagination is almost exclusively associated with violence and danger: “In Norway, we have a long history with wolves. When I was a child, I heard all these fairy tales, all these stories about them, whether they were imaginary or real. The stories were very often scary, with the “big bad wolf” howling at the moon and devouring children. In the Christian religion, the wolf is also the devil’s beast… It is said that no human has been killed by a wolf in the wild since 1843. Yet every time a wolf is spotted around Oslo, it makes the headlines because it awakens a deep-seated fear in us“, he said in an interview in 2013. For the contemporary artist, the wolf has many similarities with man (which might explain why it fascinates us so much): “We see in it a part of ourselves, a part that culture distances us from“. In this series, the Norwegian photographer invites us to question our prejudices by showing us the animal in all the diversity of its behaviour.
For the Barentsburg/Pyramid series, Christian Houge made repeated visits to the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic. The artist takes a journey back in time through these partially abandoned territories, where the USSR set up several mining colonies following the Treaty of Spitzbergen. We discover the remains of a Soviet empire (dwellings and weather stations) frozen in the Norwegian permafrost. Here, the contemporary artist examines history and reveals the impact of human activity, its motivations and its effects, on an environment that remains largely untouched. Similarly, the Arctic Technology series, produced on the same archipelago, shows the striking contrast between cutting-edge scientific facilities and a natural environment that is totally hostile to any human presence. Through this contrast, the artist aims to illustrate how far humanity is prepared to go in its quest for knowledge about itself and its surroundings.
International recognition in the world of contemporary photography
Three times nominated for the prestigious Prix Pictet, Christian Houge’s work has been widely exhibited in Europe, North America and Asia. Major exhibition venues include Fotografiska (Stockholm), the Johnson Museum (New York), the Museum of Photography (Los Angeles), the Whatcom Museum (Washington), and the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing). His work has also been presented as part of programmes organised by the Norwegian embassies in Beijing, New York, Rotterdam, Prague and London.
In 2015, his exhibition “Paradise Lost” was presented in three Chinese cities, including Beijing, at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, which has exhibited well-known photographers like Ken Kitano and Sasha Weidner. The exhibition attracted international media coverage, notably in The New York Times and Time Magazine. In 2019, Stockholm’s prestigious Fotografiska Museum, dedicated to contemporary photography, presented a solo exhibition of his Residence of Impermanence series. In 2025, a complete retrospective of his 25 years of artistic practice was presented at the Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall in Arendal, Norway.
Christian Houge has also lectured at art and climate institutions; in 2012, he gave a TED talk entitled “Exploring Man’s Condition Through Photography.” In 2021, he was awarded the Fotografiprisen, Norway’s national prize for photography, in recognition of his lasting contribution to the field.
