Untitled 22, Shadow Within, Norway/ USA is a work by contemporary photographer Christian Houge taken from the series Shadow Within. In this black and white photograph, an immaculate wolf takes up practically the whole composition. The white of its coat stands out against the darkness of the woods behind. The creature exudes a serenity and calm.
Shadow Within is a photograph series of wolves taken in Norway and in the USA. The artist intended to explore humanity’s relationship with the wolf, and ultimately with itself: its condition and its shadows, reflected through this enigmatic and highly stigmatised animal. Christian Houge wanted to take a series of photographs of wolves in their natural habitat. He sought them out in the simplest way possible and captured the moment using what he calls “the eye of modern man”: his camera.
The artist said: « Man has always mystified the wolf through tales and legends. Everything we’ve ever heard about wolves since our childhood has transformed this animal into an unforgiving monster in our minds. We remain petrified by his eyes, his howl, his jaws, the pack… And yet working on this project I learned that wolf and man have quite similar traits from a behavioral point of view and that the wolf seems to outline the darker side of man. I wanted the viewer to get in touch with his own instinct and his own inner emotions. His instinct will guide him in the interpretation of the situation he is viewing, simply through the analysis of the wolf’s body language and its stare. The viewer can have a different interpretation depending on his or her own personal associations. It could be aggression, skepticism, fear, resignation, vulnerability or even curiosity. »
This photograph has been exhibited at the Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall in Arendal, Norway, as part of Christian Houge’s solo exhibition Lost Paradise in 2025.
Christian Houge’s photographs are sold as limited edition prints. The price indicated applies to the print mounted on aluminium and unframed. For all specific requests regarding framing, please contact us. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist.
