Discover our contemporary sculptors

The 18th century saw the beginning of a new theoretical discipline in art: Esthetics. Theoreticians such as Baumgarten or Lessing published texts freeing sculpture from other artistic forms. The sculptors have therefore historical backing specific to their art form. This history is claimed by contemporary sculptors, and by which they make themselves the heirs of the very canonical and classic ancient sculpture. Creating sculptures, like any artistic endeavor, is a reinterpretation of the world from the sculptor’s point of view, but the contemporary sculptor goes further as he sometimes bends the rules of the discipline.

Being a part of the long history and practicing sculpture in the modern day, is the responsibility of all contemporary creators. Collectors also have a hand in writing this history, by buying sculptures through commissions and therefore directing the design.

Our artists: Contemporary sculptors

In amongst our selection of artists, there are nearly thirty sculptors. With different artistic and poetic leanings, each approach delivers a lion’s share of emotion and innovation. The French Yann Guillon bends the rules of expressionism with his athletic figures in bronze or stone. His realistic and dynamic depictions strive to translate the power or the sensitivity of the dancers’ and runners’ bodies in a rather academic way. Pierre Yermia is also part of the tradition whilst also updating it. Compared alongside Giacometti, he creates animal sculptures whose proportions convey poetry and fragility contrasting with the inspirational strength in his animal models.

Some artists, like the Taiwanese Tien Wen, produce distinctly contemporary sculptures and tradition is not her primary source of inspiration. The artist’s artwork is in clay and ceramic, they alter the space around them, in the same way that particular minimal art pieces do.

From the most classic to the most modern and original sculptures, all are available at Artistics.
