Reflection is a photograph by Christian Houge from the Gabba series, capturing a man immersed in water, perhaps in a lake, surrounded by water lily leaves.

In this series, the photographer wishes to highlight the Sámi people’s spiritual bond with nature. In the Northern Sámi language, gabba refers to a white reindeer. This animal holds symbolic value, representing uniqueness and beauty within the natural world of the Sámi people. Through his portraits, Christian Houge seeks to convey authenticity, emotional depth and a distinct identity. The aim is to create images that transcend mere surface representation, capturing a moment of truth and presence.

For this series, Christian Houge decided to use the wet collodion technique – a photographic process discovered by the British photographer Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. Renowned for its unique, organic and exceptional quality, this process is nevertheless highly complex, involving intricate chemical processes and very long processing times, which explains why it is rarely used. The models sit still for long exposures, and a session can take many hours.

Alongside my fine art photography, I’ve dedicated countless hours to learning and crafting collodion wet plates. Each flaw has deepened my understanding of this intricate, alchemical process. A wet plate portrait is more than an image – it’s a tangible encounter, a one-of-a-kind expression of authenticity and presence.” Christian Houge

The photographer opted for this technique because it involves an element of unpredictability that reflects life’s fragility, transience and imperfection, resulting in vibrant and profound portraits. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, where images are captured and consumed in seconds, collodion photography breathes new life into the classical portrait by demanding time, craftsmanship and deep engagement with the medium.

The photograph offered for sale is a limited-edition print, not the original photograph taken using the wet collodion technique. The original image was scanned from a wet collodion plate, then printed as a limited-edition Archival pigment print on cotton paper.
