Stonegate R1 is a monumental sculpture by contemporary Italian artist Mattia Bosco, made of Crevoladossola black Palissandro marble and iron.
Stonegate is one of a series of twelve sculptures designed specifically for Mattia Bosco’s solo exhibition “Korai”, which runs from 22 September 2023 to 14 January 2024 in the Colosseum Archaeological Park in Rome.
For more information about the exhibition, please find a dedicated article here.
For Mattia Bosco, stone is a solid embodiment of time – a kind of singular fragment of the world and its history. This sculpture, in the shape of a triangle, represents a frontier, a bridge, a passageway to another dimension linking the here and the elsewhere, the past and the present.
The contemporary Italian artist explains his approach as follows: “I create my sculptures in the sunshine, in the open air, in the heat and in the cold, in the dust, I work with my hands, with my eyes, in a constant exercise of attention, in a rapid exchange, bouncing back and forth between what I decide to do and what happens, between impetus and discovery, between courage and caution. Rather than choosing, I bring certain possibilities into play and not others, I look at a piece of stone and decide to intervene there and not elsewhere, knowing that each time, as with the genie in the lamp, I can only ask one, two or at most three questions.”
Palissandro marble has a fairly uniform, neutral beige colour with grey and brownish veins, stripes and shading. Here it is extracted from the Crevoladossola quarry in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the Piedmont region. This marble has been used in the past for prestigious buildings such as the cathedrals of Milan and Pavia.
