What Is Fiber Art?

Fiber Art is a broad field of contemporary art in which fibers, textiles and textile techniques become essential elements of artistic expression. Two Contemporary Approaches to Fiber Art

For Dutch artist Christiane Maurer, weaving is both a craft and a means of investigating color. Drawing on her background in industrial design, textile research and colour perception, she develops each composition digitally before translating it into a meticulously handwoven textile. The loom becomes a tool for materializing an idea conceived on the computer, while the weaving process introduces subtle variations in texture, light and color that cannot be achieved through digital means alone.

If Christiane Maurer uses weaving to construct the artwork itself, Japanese artist Maho Maeda begins with textiles that already carry their own history. In some of her mixed-media works, fragments of antique kimonos are incorporated directly into the composition, not as a support but as an essential artistic material. Carrying traces of previous lives, these historic textiles become part of a visual language that intertwines memory, cultural heritage and contemporary creation. By combining traditional fabrics with painting and other media, Maeda transforms textile into both material and meaning.
