About the work :

MODIANO is a portrait painting by French contemporary artist Christophe Dupety. This is a portrait of the French man of letters and Nobel Prize winner in literature, Patrick Modiano. The writer’s portrait stands out against a green background. It is not precisely painted, but in the manner of a brush sketch whose brush stokes can still be seen.

In this series of portraits, the subject is placed in the centre of the composition, the eyes staring back at the spectator. The background is of an abstract nature: figurative elements when there are any (a blind, an armchair) are barely outlined. Christophe Dupety seems particularly interested in his model's stare, which becomes the trademark of their identities and the vehicle of their feelings which the artist conveys to the onlooker.

The portraits of this series of contemporary paintings attest to the artist's approach, who, according to his own words, tries "to bring out the joy of painting in my work, that is the color, the fluidity, the spontaneity."
