Romain Langlois: The mysteries of material

The French artist Romain Langlois has become known for his unique bronze artwork, to which he gives an appearance of a rock or wood. His work is not limited to this technical virtuosity: by reproducing ‘objects’ that he takes from nature (a rock, a tree trunk or a beam…), he introduces a poetic twist that rises the ordinary to the rank of extraordinary. Here, a twisted chevron that seems to come to life in an upward movement. There, a golden magma-like material seems to tear apart the rock from within…

Our eyes that are used to ignore the starting point objects of these sculptures, are suddenly captivated by this new form which he seeks to give meaning to. It is in this questioning (“What am I looking at?”) that lies the true strength of the artist’s work.
