Mattia Bosco: sculpture as a maieutic process

Artistics is pleased to announce the arrival of Mattia Bosco, whose approach to stone sculpture immediately captivated us with its singularity and mysterious beauty.

For this Italian artist, sculpture is a maieutic process, allowing the artist to draw out of the material “that which is already present within it”, without imposing new forms. The stones which he chooses from the quarries, after a careful visual examination, already hold the potential of the sculpture that will emerge. His intervention consists of finding the most visible lines and making them more distinct with a simple gesture which he compares to “removing the dust which blurs a feature so that it can be fully revealed.”

He does not see stone as a passive material on which the sculptor, a bearer of form, makes his own vision spring forth: each action creates a corresponding reaction in the stone, in a collaborative movement between two forces, connected by a “circularity of breath”..
