What Is a Wood Sculpture?

Wood sculpture occupies a unique place in contemporary art. One of the oldest sculptural practices in human history, it continues to inspire contemporary artists through its versatility, warmth and expressive power. Traditionally associated with direct carving techniques, wood sculpture refers to artworks for which wood is the primary material, whether carved, assembled, turned or transformed through other sculptural processes. Today however, contemporary artists have expanded this definition considerably, sometimes preserving the raw appearance of branches or reclaimed wood, sometimes shaping the material into highly refined abstract forms.

Unlike marble or bronze, wood is a living and organic material. Its grain, density, imperfections and textures actively influence the final artwork. Because countless wood species exist — from walnut and oak to cedar or driftwood — artists can explore highly diverse visual and tactile effects. Wood may appear smooth or rough, geometric or organic, minimalist or expressive. This flexibility partly explains why wood sculpture remains so present in contemporary art today.

Wood Sculpture Through History

Wood has been used for sculpture since prehistoric times, although very few ancient examples have survived due to the material’s fragility. In Western art history, wood became especially important during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, notably for religious sculpture and architectural decoration. For centuries however, its association with craftsmanship, decorative arts and folk traditions led wood to be considered less “noble” than marble or bronze. Modern and contemporary artists would later reclaim these very qualities, embracing wood for its immediacy, emotional warmth and strong physical presence.

Today, contemporary wood sculpture ranges from minimalist abstractions to expressive organic forms, monumental installations and collectible wall sculptures. Its tactile dimension and strong connection to nature continue to resonate with contemporary artists and collectors alike.

Contemporary Wood Sculptors Represented by Artistics

Among the contemporary artists represented by Artistics, some use wood occasionally as part of a broader sculptural practice, while others have made it central to their artistic language.

Thierry Martenon

French sculptor Thierry Martenon creates contemporary wood sculptures defined by fluid lines, rhythmic textures and a subtle dialogue with light. Working primarily with Alpine woods such as spruce, walnut or maple, he combines direct carving techniques with a minimalist aesthetic inspired by nature and modernist sculpture. His works reveal a refined sensitivity to material, balance and tactile perception.

Wouter van der Vlugt

Dutch artist Wouter van der Vlugt explores a more organic and expressive approach to wood sculpture. Through carving and assembling wood into dynamic forms, he creates sculptures inspired by natural growth, movement and transformation. Rough textures, asymmetries and visible grain patterns become integral parts of the artwork itself, giving his sculptures a powerful physical presence.

Together, these artists illustrate the remarkable diversity of contemporary wood sculpture today and demonstrate how wood continues to offer unique creative possibilities for contemporary artists.
