Op art and kinetic art: The primacy of perception

In the early decades of the 20th century, artists began to question the value of stability in relation to works of art, and the passivity of the viewer. They took an interest in light and movement, no longer as subjects for representation, but as constituent parts of their works.

This trend really took off in the 1950s, and the work of artists exploring these new territories came to be known as op art (or optical art) and kinetic art. Scientific studies in the field of visual perception, new technologies and new materials fuelled their research. Their practice, deeply rooted in the abstract tradition, is based on perception and the active participation of the viewer, who becomes the creator of the artistic experience.

Op art and kinetic art have never ceased to be a field of experimentation for artists, as the contemporary works presented on the following pages demonstrate.

Op art and kinetic art at Artistics

The Artistics gallery represents a number of artists active in the fields of op art and kinetic art. Painters and sculptors, their work continues the research of the pioneers of lumino-kineticism and the 20th century artists who preceded them: From Alexander Calder to Julio Le Parc, from Victor Vasarely to Bridget Riley. Browse the pages below to discover the variety of their approaches, all of which have in common the primacy of perception through the use of light and movement. For more information on an artist or to access their full biography, we invite you to explore further by consulting their profile page.

Op art and kinetic art: The artists in the gallery

Franck K‘s works are like paintings engaged in a permanent transformation. Their mirror-polished stainless steel surfaces create images that change according to the refraction of light and the movements of the viewer. The space that houses the work becomes its very material. In contrast to the formal vocabulary of many op art and kinetic artists, characterised by profound geometric rigour, Franck K’s work favours fluidity: The surfaces of his sculptures are animated by an undulation that evokes that of the sea.

The sculptures by Venezuelan artist Alejandro Vega Beuvrin combine a highly geometric dimension (they are composed of metal sheets that intersect at right angles) with organic forms. Some of his pieces also have a reflective surface that generates vibratory effects, placing these creations in the realm of both op art and kinetic art.

The paintings of German artist Doris Marten represent another strand of op art and kinetic art, exploring the optical possibilities offered by the interaction of colours and a reduced alphabet of shapes. Following in the footsteps of Richard Anuszkiewicz, one of the founders of op art, and Bridget Riley, Doris Marten creates sober compositions based on the repetition of a single form (the line) using a reduced colour palette to create optical illusions.

Certain paintings by the Korean artist Ahn Hyun-Ju constitute part of this same research. In the series Restrained Supersaturation, Unfolding Lines, the artist interweaves chromatic circles on an aluminium support to create an impression of movement and three-dimensionality.
