Biography
Nicolas Galtier’s abstract paintings possess a vibrant depth and subtle movement, created by the superimposition of materials and textures that capture the light. The traces and motifs that give life to his paintings draw on a vast repertoire of forms derived from artistic heritage and natural elements.
Nicolas Galtier: a pictorial pathway into abstraction
Nicolas Galtier was born in 1971. He studied watercolour and pastel with established painters. His early works, resolutely figurative, explore nature and landscape; they are displayed in his studio-showroom in Languedoc-Roussillon. In 2002, he moved to Italy, first to Milan, and then to Rome. Immersed in the Italian capital, where the legacies of Antiquity, the Renaissance and the Baroque coexist, he gradually developed a personal artistic language, nurtured by numerous trips and visits to museums. His work then turned towards abstraction, informed by techniques he explored in a self-taught and intuitive way. In 2017, he chose to return to France and settled near Angers, where he lives and works.
The traces of time in the patterns of humanity
The influences that inspire Nicolas Galtier’s work have their roots in many fields: painting — particularly Italian Quattrocento and ancient frescoes —, sacred art and religious icons, the decorative arts of the Etruscans and ancient Egyptian civilisations, and even textiles: Venetian fabrics, Japanese kimonos, and Middle Eastern and Indian textiles from the Silk Road.
The abstract style of his works, often centred on the repetition of a motif, stems from a reflection on the traces left by time, something the contemporary artist observes in the wear and tear of frescoes, works of art and ancient objects. The gradual effacement of the subject, both relentless and brutal, introduces an element of mystery and timeless beauty capable of moving the observer. The subject then becomes more abstract, offering a more open interpretation. The artist has long been fascinated by the question of time from a philosophical perspective, a subject he even explored in a thesis during his studies in Literature and the Arts.
“My paintings explore the interaction between matter, light and memory through surfaces textured with precious metals. Gold and silver take on the form of sensitive landscapes that reveal the passage of time through traces, sometimes even vestiges of faded motifs. These echoes of elements drawn from decorative and sacred art invite a moment of inner silence. Painting, like a silent spatial presence, thus enters into dialogue with architecture, contemporary design and the decorative arts.” Nicolas Galtier
By focusing on patterns, the artist identifies recurring forms that span eras and cultures, until they become a kind of common language shared by all of humanity. Nicolas Galtier sees these motifs as a form of sacred geometry, rooted not only in human history but also in the natural elements that make up the Earth, such as stones and water. In this contemporary painter‘s works, the motif ceases to be decoration and ornament and stands at the heart of a reflection on memory and archetypal forms.
A technique that captures and reveals the light
To create his works, Nicolas Galtier has developed a technique based on the use of multiple materials: pigments, binders, glues, powders and fine metal leaf. Depending on the effect required, he incorporates gold, silver, brass or copper leaf, playing on their tones and reflections. His favourite support is raw linen, which he buys in Rome from one of Europe’s oldest suppliers. For him, the quality of the materials is an essential element.
His technique, developed over time, is based on the application of successive layers in which the order of the elements applied varies from one work to another. This masterful layering of materials and textures allows him to orchestrate a subtle dialogue between matte and glossy surfaces, giving light a central role in the perception of his paintings. The works thereby gain depth and a sense of movement, offering an impression that shifts with the viewer’s gaze.
