Biography
Brad Wilson is a contemporary American artist who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He made a name for himself with his Affinity series, featuring studio portraits of wild animals.
Contemporary photography in constant evolution
Brad Wilson began his professional career as a contemporary photographer in New York over 20 years ago, shooting portraits for magazines, publishers and private companies. In 2010, he felt that his work was starting to become too routine and predictable.
Affinity to change the way you look at things
He then abandoned human models and embarked on an artistic project, photographing animals in his studio. This is how his photographic series Affinity came about. By breaking free from the codes of animal photography, he has created a new paradigm in the way animals are portrayed.
The power that emanates from each of Brad Wilson’s images represents a world that, for most of us, has become alien: a world of instinct, intuition and awareness of the present moment, a totally natural world that contrasts with the increasingly urbanised and computerised world that surrounds us.
Every shot is carefully printed
His photographs are striking for the sharpness of each detail, giving a rarely experienced sense of intimacy and closeness with the animal. In his photos, he eliminates all barriers and distractions, so that the animals seem to emerge from an intensely black background to reveal themselves completely and question our conception of what it means to be human.
Brad Wilson looks for confrontation between man and animal, nature. In this world, where the promiscuity between the two is sometimes erased, Brad Wilson seeks to challenge us with a look that reminds us that nature is all around us.
His vision
Brad Wilson has a deep respect for the animals he portrays in his contemporary photography. For him, “It’s an amazing and rare privilege to work with these animals, especially since many of them are seriously endangered and may soon disappear from the earth. I hope in some small way that these photographs can serve as worthy ambassadors for the species they depict, reminding us of our connection to the natural world and to the many compelling creatures that share the planet with us.“. The Affinity series of wildlife photographs reminds us that we share the Earth with creatures as unique and complex as ourselves, and that it is in our interest to protect them.
However, his photographic work has an effect that goes far beyond simply raising our environmental awareness. There’s something else very visible in the intensity of these animals’ gaze, something that echoes our own evolution. As we continue to build a new human world, ever more detached from the natural environment around us, we generate a profound sense of isolation and separation. The Affinity series does the opposite: it reminds us that we are not alone, that we are not separate, that we are part of a living biodiversity, admirably rich and interconnected.
Exhibitions around the world
The work of contemporary artist Brad Wilson has been widely published and exhibited around the world, including collaborations with Audubon, Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, Vogue Italia, Paris Match, Vanity Fair Italy and CNN. In 2021 the New Mexico Museum of Art acquired two of his photographs.
