About the work :

Studies XVII is a photograph from the Studies series by contemporary photographer Luca Marziale.

In his work Luca Marziale investigates the idea and the definition of landscape. The artist shows micro-landscapes, focusing his attention on the overlooked details of nature and on the microorganisms found in extreme environments.

The Studies series, photographed in the natural park of Yellowstone in the US, has started Luca Marziale’s work on micro-landscapes. Indeed, it was here that the artist developed an interest for the thermophiles, old microorganisms living at extremely high temperatures that, according to some scientific theories, could have had an important role in the evolution of living beings on Earth.

The environments created by the bacteria have a captivating and surprising beauty, almost unearthly ; they fascinate the artist with their forms, colors and textures. The absence of points of reference in the composition of the photographs challenges the viewers’ perception.
