About the work :

No 191 is a painting by contemporary Chinese artist Hongyu Zhang, foam the series 'Portrait', in China ink, acrylic, charcoal and pastel on 3D canvas.

This painting is of a man's face set against a background in which different elements are superimposed. The lower right corner is comprised of a series of white and gray geometric lines, with a touch of red. The rest of the background is composed of different nuances of gray punctuated with traces of blue, yellow and orange. The face stands out from this background which lends a feeling of agitation to the work, especially in the lower left side of the piece where the ink has been applied in thick and irregular layers. The lines of the man's face seem to jump out at the viewer conferring a vigorous finish to the whole composition.

The characters HongyuZhang paints are fictional, they are more like self portraits : " All my portraits, it's me" says he. Each stroke constitutes the basic unity : the artist works directly on the floor accompanied by music which helps him find the strength, the rhythm, the movement of each piece. The artist creates an energetic space which draws us in and holds us, inviting us to decipher this tense writing which looks as though it was invented to describe the depths of the soul.

Hongyu Zhang''s painting stems from calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting with a preference for China ink, which he uses together with other mediums : acrylic, pastel and engraving.

His work is signed, sold framed.
