About the work :

Mes vieux gants (my old gloves) is a work by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, from the "petites histoires en réserve" (tales from the storage area) series.

This figurative sandstone sculpture is of a man standing with pigments of colour on part of his face and right hand. He is standing on a wooden crate. In front of him, dotted with blue and red pigments a pair of boxing gloves proportionately bigger than he as if they were in the foreground. He seems somewhat satisfied, perhaps to have taken off the gloves.

« Georges Perec wrote in Espèces d'espace, "Life is going from one space to the next, trying your hardest not to bump yourself." Some box to put this maxim to the test. Edmard boxed for a very long time and the gloves he entrusted me are proof of this

This sculpture exhibited in the Arts et Métiers museum between 29 May and 26 Aug 2018, part of the "petites histoires en réserve" series was created during Cécile Raynal's residency behind the scenes at the museum in 2017. As per her method, the artist created busts and standing figurines of the people she met as well as animal sculptures (wolves and foxes) recurrent in the works of the artist for a few years now.

The wood box is not the one on the picture, it would be custom-made with minimal dimensions of H 88 x L 57 x D 57 cm.

Dimensions of the man: H 62 x L 19 x D 19 cm

Dimensions of the gloves: 38 x 24 x 17 cm

Total dimensions of the installation : H 150 x L 57 x D 57 cm
