About the work :

Janus's heads is a bronze sculpture by French artist Martine Demal, from the series Primary Forms.

In accordance with its title, this sculpture embodies a duality. Named after Janus, the Roman God of Beginnings and Ends; one can imagine two faces, like those of the eponymous deity, not looking at each other. The two faces are icons of symbiosis, as well as rejection. The balance of this ‘two-in-one’ sculpture is due to the dynamics of the figures that ‘appeared simultaneously’, requiring the artist to include the movement in her creative work.

The body form is the poetical beginning and end points for Martine Demal. It is the artist's first inspiration and her first tool, where commitment and energy guarantee a sculpture’s creation.

If body forms are the primary influence of the artist’s creative process, the creation of the artwork is also motivated by a desire to satisfy a dynamic requirement that contrasts the sculpture’s stillness. Concern for accuracy and precision lead the artist's hands to seek a continual aesthetic improvement."

Original artwork: the sculpture is signed and available in 8 editions and 4 artist’s proofs.
