About the work :

Chanel Watchmaking is a work by Swiss contemporary artist Guy Oberson from the ‘M. Legend’ (Légende M) series.

The artist inspiration for this series came through reading the ‘Le Monde’ newspaper: he noticed with surprise that despite very different images being side by side, it did not cause the reader an identification problem. Thanks to a clear and recognisable graphic identity, a report photo is distinguished from a fashion advertising photo, at first glance. Guy Oberson decides to disrupt the viewing of these images and, using them as a reference point, reinterprets them all the same way using a black chalk technique, his specialty.  He therefore treats the image of a young man posing for a luxury brand in exactly the same way as the image of a Mongolian mother living in a yurt with her child, increasing possible interpretations from an aesthetic and meaning point of view.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.
