About the work :

Anthropocene Cell is a sculpture by French contemporary artist Romain Langlois.

This artwork shows the artist's predilection for the representation of natural elements like wooden trunks or stones found in French forests of Auvergne region.

In this way the artist struggles himself to translate into sculpture the power and the majesty of natural models with a realistic approach, in order to protect them against the passage of time.

This work was realized in the Petrifying Fountains of Saint Nectaire in collaboration with Eric Papon, one of the last craftsmen in France and worldwide able to master the techniques of crystallisation and petrification. The process involves placing a mold under the petrifying fountain for months. The gradual crystallization of calcium carbonate, daily controlled by the craftsman, gives gradually birth to the artwork.

To learn more about this artwork and the technique, come see the article "Un illusionniste aux Arts Décos" highlighting Romain Langlois and Eric Papon’s work at the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris (April 2016).

Unique sculpture, signed.
