Afar II is a diptych from the Afar series by contemporary photographer Luca Marziale. 

In his work Luca Marziale investigates the idea and the definition of landscape. The artist shows micro-landscapes, focusing his attention on the overlooked details of nature and on the microorganisms found in extreme environments. 

Afar is a series shot in the Northern Afar region of Ethiopia, one of the hottest places on Earth, where temperatures can rise as high as 65 degrees Celsius. Because of the climatic and political conditions, the production of this series demanded an entire specialized team that travelled with the artist: a cook, because access to fresh water and food was limited, a translator, to relate with the local tribes, and military assistance. 

In this extreme environment exist one of the oldest bacteria found on earth: thermophiles, dating back three billion years. Thermophiles continue to fascinate scientists, some believing they are a contributing factor to the most complex forms of life on earth. In the images, there is no familiar point of reference or clear scale the thermophiles are in relation to, abstracting the viewers perspective. The saturated colors, creating an otherworldly environment, deeply fascinated the artist.
