No.211124 is an abstract wall sculpture in wood by French sculptor Thierry Martenon. This rectangular wall sculpture, composed of abstract motifs, creates a stunning interplay of light and shadow.

Thierry Martenon’s sculptures are characterised by their clean, simple lines, harmonious, flowing forms and refined, meticulously crafted textures. His artistic approach is profoundly aesthetic and based on remarkable technical mastery. His creations embody timeless elegance, while demonstrating a constant quest for renewal and originality. The artist does not name his works; he prefers to number them according to the year they were created.

Thierry Martenon lives and works in his native village in the Chartreuse massif in Savoie. The mountains and the forest are part of his daily life and a constant source of inspiration. The shapes and textures he observes in nature, whether rocks, bark or mushrooms, feed his creations. His creative process begins with drawing, an essential stage in finding the ideal shape. The selection of the trunk is particularly demanding, based on precise criteria. The sculptor works exclusively with local species such as ash, spruce, walnut and maple.

Once in the tranquillity of his workshop, Thierry Martenon carves his pieces using traditional woodworking tools, drawing on the expertise he has acquired through his cabinet-making experience. For the finishing touches, he explores a variety of unusual techniques such as brushing, burning, sandblasting and engraving, as well as applying Indian ink patinas and lacquers. The aim of this work is to create highly textured pieces capable of capturing the light, because, according to the artist: “It is the light that animates the piece of wood, it is the light that makes it vibrate“. A superb interplay of light and shadow enhances the wood, giving it a sense of movement.

Today, from his studio nestling in the Prealps, his works can be found in prestigious private collections all over the world. The artist has also exhibited at renowned institutions such as the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

I don’t recognise myself in the word artist, I’m a sculptor; it’s not the thought, it’s the gesture that defines me. Some people talk about the intelligence of the hand, and I like that.” Thierry Martenon
