Biography
Pierre Yermia is a French sculptor who lives and works in the Parisian region. After attending the Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Toulouse, he chose to work in bronze. For the past 30 years, he has been producing a unique body of work on the contemporary art scene, featuring animal sculpture (statues of animals) and slender female figures. Browse our site to discover his splendid, slender statues, reminiscent of the work of the famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
A work full of curves and tension
“My work is a constant search for a moment of precarious and improbable balance, where strength and fragility are simultaneously in conflict“, he confides. This description makes perfect sense when we look at the Lying Figures and Animals series. The artist plays on physical contrasts (women with slender legs and wide hips, bulls with powerful chests, slender legs and small heads): “My human or animal figures, deeply rooted, stand on their fragile limbs and rise in a slow movement, defying the laws of gravity. The forms are elongated, the frail limbs contrast with the more robust torsos, and the heads are reduced to their essentials, perched on long, tapering necks. The solids and voids respond to each other in a permanent interplay, creating a monumental, open space.”
His Lying Figures, apparently languid female figures, are in fact in positions that are impossible to hold, almost levitating. The tension generated by these improbably balanced figures intrigues and captivates. These figures of women are all curves, movement and lightness, in a search for expressiveness that can sometimes be reminiscent of mannerism. Pierre Yermia’s technique and expertise give the bronze an impression of lightness and momentum.
Work on a monumental scale for outdoor statuary
While there are many small-scale contemporary sculptures in Pierre Yermia’s oeuvre, the contemporary sculptor also sometimes works on a monumental scale: “The small and medium-sized formats I create are the necessary successive stages in my monumental sculptures (on average 3 metres high or 3 metres long)“. Indeed, the artist has produced large-scale statues of animals and human figures that have been exhibited outdoors. The Great Stag, a monumental sculpture measuring three metres and weighing over 250 kg, was acquired by a luxury hotel and installed at the entrance to the estate, where it now welcomes visitors.
Pierre Yermia’s contemporary sculptures, which have been exhibited at a number of art events, bear witness to a humanity that is always in danger, yet at the same time optimistic and serene.
