About the work :

Writing is a journey is a bronze sculpture by French artist Martine Demal, from the series Signs & Writings.

This is a horizontal artwork composition, massive and fragile at the same time. Like a handwritten line, this sculpture brings together a set of clean meaningful shapes. Like an invitation, the artwork is asking the viewer to look for a story. In working the abstract shapes, the artist delivers a dynamic impetus to the piece’s material. As a result, by also choreographing together the used and void spaces, she draws out of her abstract sculptures an almost musical rhythm.

The French sculptress Martine Demal chose the body form as the basis of her aesthetic study. A desire of formal and dynamic balance led her creativeness and also initiated the move towards a more abstract work.

In seeking purer shapes, the artist has gradually removed the anthropomorphic features in her artwork, making way for traits of formal human essence, as well as a unique rhythmic harmony. The written word, a conduit of meaning, has become a directing guideline for research and can convey inexhaustible subtle meanings.

The sculpture is made up of 3 separated blocks to be combined according to the artist's instructions (as in the photo) or freely. Original artwork: the sculpture is signed and available in 8 editions and 4 artist’s proofs.
