About the work :

Velvet is a work by Swiss contemporary artist Guy Oberson from the ‘Porous Zones’ (Zones Poreuses) series.

This black chalk drawing is inspired by a life model photograph. The person’s pose attracted the artist for its animalistic connotations.

The series investigates the theme of a being’s porousness by examining the anatomy and the body, a very appealing subject for the artist who, in this series, deals with skin, brain, breathing and internal pulse… In this black chalk drawing, the represented skin is transparent, aesthetically resembling an X-Ray. "The ‘Porous Zones’ series is born out of a quest around the theme of permeability, the osmosis between an interior and a surface that explores the links between the natural world and science, reason and the unconscious."  Antonia Nessi, art historian.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.
