About the work :

Spinning top is a ceramic sculpture by contemporary artist Tien Wen.

The artist used the Raku technique. It is a process of firing pottery at low temperature for a fairly short time, originally from Japan (‘raku-yaki’ in Japanese). The thermal shock produces different shrinkages in the enamel and the clay, giving Tien Wen’s terracotta sculptures a metallic hue similar to that of bronze.

Generally, Tien Wen's work revolves around the idea of abstract, purity and shapes, volume, opposing corners and lines, curves and angles. Her minimalist artworks highlight the fragile balance she is after in her sculptures’ shapes. Tien Wen refuses to have any functionality in her sculptures, no object or end purpose should be seen here. She says: "I want the artwork to exist through shape and through lines".
