About the work :

SOUND AND VISION — BEBOP ORANGE (9 pieces, B) is an installation by contemporary German artist Doris Marten from the series Sound and Vision.

The complete installation consists of 15 pieces (SOUND AND VISION - BEBOP ORANGE), but the collector can choose to acquire only a part of the installation (with a minimum of 4 pieces). The composition of the different pieces of the installation is an artistic statement: all pieces are carefully chosen by Doris Marten to create a certain balance and therefore they cannot be replaced at will. If a piece changes, a new composition must be proposed by the artist. She compares this to a musical composition: it is certainly possible to listen to parts of the whole piece, but if you mix the individual notes then it is no longer recognisable.

With the simple use of lines Doris Marten explores the perception of colours and their influence on each other. Line reveal colours individually and they bring to life the effect of one colour upon another. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. She views time as a veritable production material, a necessary part of the work's development during the creative process.

In this last series Sound and Vision, the line remains the only motif of the compositions, but it is illustrated on a new medium which is none other than a vinyl disk. In painting on a turntable, the artist transformed these acoustic data carriers into visual aids: as if the musical pieces are replayed with a brush, in a sort of transformation of sound into image. Individually made in an enduring search for a balance between line, colour and rhythm, these paintings make up an alphabet from which the artist draws on to create different installations and collections.

This artwork is a one-off piece, delivered with its certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. The indicated dimensions are those of the whole installation; each piece has a diameter of 30 cm and the recommended space between the paintings is 5 cm.

The Sound and Vision series was exhibited for the exhibition Every Choice is a Change in the basement of the German company and contemporary art benefactor Westdeutsche Lotterie GmbH. To learn more about this exhibition, click here.

The Rammelsberg mine, situated near the historic town of Goslar in Lower Saxony, (Germany), and a Unesco World Heritage Site, featured in 2022 a four-part installation from the Sound and Vision series. Several hundred works from the series are displayed on the steel walls of the former ore processing plant, transforming the site into a visual experience. Each piece functions like a color and a tone value within the final composition, like a musical chord within a concert. Most of these works were created specifically for the exhibition: the sulfate mineral deposits of the Rammelsberg mines inspired Doris Marten's new editions featuring colors such as blue and green vitriol, white and orange.
