About the work :

Selfie is a work by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, from the "petites histoires en réserve" (tales from the storage area) series.

This installation of figurative sandstone sculptures is comprised of a woman and a camera. The woman is leaning against a crate which has a larger than life sculpted camera on top of it, in the lens of which the viewer sees their own reflection.

« And from the depths of the tomb, the eye was watching Cain, not Poe's but Hugo's. Later, the low relief of an eye would slip into the camera. Then, another will be reflected, the eye of the viewer. »

This sculpture exhibited in the Arts et Métiers museum between 29 May and 26 Aug 2018, part of the "petites histoires en réserve" series was created during Cécile Raynal's residency behind the scenes at the museum in 2017. As per her method, the artist created busts and standing figurines of the people she met as well as animal sculptures (wolves and foxes) recurrent in the works of the artist for a few years now.
