The (not so discreet) charm of large sculptures
“Life is for the passionate, for the excessive”, wrote the French writer Pierre Drieu la Rochelle. We can only keep to this assertion in regard to art. In particular with sculpture, the effect of a piece can be increased tenfold by its size. Hence, large sculpture attracts the eye and is impressive, reminding us to our own small size. In the history of art, monumental sculpture has often embodied inspirational causes such as religious or political power, or a funereal homage. The famous Sphinx of Giza, the largest existing sculpture in the world, is a perfect example. Although its origins are still the subject of many questions, it is no mystery that its colossal dimensions had the primary function of honouring a god or an Egyptian pharaoh. However, large format works are also characteristic of abstract sculpture, especially in contemporary art where large sculptures are often exhibited in a public spaces, essentially fulfilling an aesthetic purpose.

Our selected large sculptures
Inspired by Eastern and African cultures, the French artist Marine de Soos produces poetic artwork embodying original memories as well as imaginary moments. Centred around the themes of motherhood, childhood and intimacy, and grouped around the three elements of: water, air and earth; Marine de Soos' bronze pieces are available in several sizes, from small pieces to the large sized sculptures suitable for outdoors. Bronze sculpture is also a favourite area for the French artist, Pierre Yermia. Specialising in human and animal figures, this artist likes to take on large sculptures, such as his ‘Large Deer’ or ‘Large Bull’.
