Bronze sculpture, work for many hands

Bronze sculpture is an ancient art, seen throughout the history of art, from Antiquity to the present day. In the second half of the 19th century, the French artist: Auguste Rodin offered new views on this material in the context of modern art. Contemporary artists have been able to prove that bronze – by virtue of its durability, its creative possibilities and its opportunities in reproduction – still has its place in moulded works.

Indeed, bronze sculptures are interesting in that it can be reproduced giving rise to series of editions of the same artwork from a mould. It is by virtue of this possibility of reproduction that bronze sculpture questions the notion of creation in sculpture. A true work for many hands, several steps are needed prior to sale of the artwork. The original sculpture is first modelled in wax by the artist. This model is then moulded and cast in bronze by the foundry. This close collaboration continues after the casting, during work on the patinas, the artist and the craftsman come together. So, if the initial idea and the first instance of the artwork are attributed to the talent of the artist, the actual physical creation of the artwork must be attributed to the foundry worker.

Jacques Owczarek’s animal sculpture is a prime example of this creativity using a material so steeped in history. The French sculptor confesses that he designs his animals intuitively, so much so that they are the ones who reveal themselves to him. His menagerie is populated by dozens of animal sculptures that only divulge themselves on close inspection.

Halfway between abstract and figurative sculpture, the bronze sculptures of Romain Langlois represent natural elements, such as: rocks or tree branches. The artist draws his inspiration from nature and brings the elements back to life by reproducing them in bronze in a very realistic way, except that the stones are split and the pieces of wood are hollow. To engage and question the viewer, Romain Langlois combines the surfaces into trompe-l’oeil, imitating the appearance of wood or rock with polished and gilded surfaces, suggesting an animated and moving material, such as sap or lava. The artist’s bronze sculptures captivate the viewer whilst also igniting their imagination. They are works of art that break the classical sculpture rules, moving away from a being a statue and becoming a real object.
