Abstract art in search of meaning

If it is true that: “It is in art where man definitely surpasses himself” (Simone de Beauvoir), then it is unsurprising that abstract art fascinates all cultural artwork lovers so much. Emerging and distancing itself from the figurative art at the beginning of Impressionism in the 19th century, abstract aesthetic doctrine rejects faithful depiction of reality. It is only in the 20th century that abstract sculpture and abstract painting began.

In Europe, disrupted by totalitarianism and scientific discoveries, artists such as Alex Calder embark on a search of meaning through art. They broke with a long tradition of figurative sculpting inherited from ancient Greece and ushered in a new age: sculpture will no longer be cultural, nor representing a sensory world, it will be abstract in three dimensions.

Our abstract sculpture artists

Our artists decided to apply their know-how to create different pieces, freed from the imperatives of realism. Delphine Brabant is fascinated by architectural processes and questions what material to use depending on shape: concrete, bronze or plaster… The abstract sculpture work by this artist explores the possibilities that materials offer when freed from figurative rules. Taiwanese artist, Tien Wen, produces abstract ceramic sculptures. With elegance and grace, her non-figurative pieces arouse curiosity in a spiritual way, removing the physical for an almost supernatural version. Also working in ceramics is the Israeli, Sharon Brill, creating monochrome abstract sculptures with organic shapes. The originality of her work is due to her views on abstract as a means of depiction where the aim is less about true likeness than the challenge of removing appearances. She therefore manages to capture the essential ambience of her native Mediterranean.
