About the work :

The School, Norilsk is a photograph by the French photographer Christophe Jacrot from the Norlisk series produced in 2017 in Siberia.

This series illustrates the harsh living conditions of the people living in the Russian city. The artist, a specialist of bad weather photography, has already produced some series whose subject is the environment with a polar climate. However, Norilsk is quite peculiar because human presence is more visible. Christophe Jacrot says: “Almost completely shut off from the outside world, the city of Norilsk in northern Siberia is a surreal place dominated by the world’s largest nickel mining. Pollution from the enterprise and the harsh climate make life hard for those who live and work here, but there is also a pride surviving in such an inhospitable environment.”

For many years, Christophe Jacrot's artistic project has been focused on his pursuit of bad weather conditions. The large urban areas have become his favourite areas to shoot in (NYC, Chicago, Tokyo, Hong Kong) but more recently the artist has been looking for natural landscapes as Iceland or the Normandy coasts.
