Remembrance #27 is a work by the Japanese artist Maho Maeda.

This work is part of a recent series by the artist entitled Remembrance. The memory of living beings, but also of objects, is a theme dear to the artist. With her art she wants to reveal stories, freezing them in time and bringing them out of oblivion. For this series, she chose an object from the Japanese tradition: the kimono. She procures old kimonos, cuts them up and incorporates them into the canvas and paint.

"Antique kimonos have many stories to tell. A long time ago, someone designed a fabric, made it by hand, sold it, bought it, wore it, took over it, and then it arrived in my hands. How could anyone imagine that these kimonos would go from Japan to Mexico? I try to go back in time and I draw as if I were pulling a thread from history. I close my eyes, and then I ponder and evoke them”.

Maho Maeda's artistic research focuses on nature and its sounds: starting from the observation of nature, the artist asks herself what sounds characterise it and how to translate them into images. In her works, the sound traces are transformed into lines that move, change direction, transform and break. The lines cross the surface, or the different surfaces, creating harmonious compositions charged with strength and poetry.

Abstract shapes and patterns complement the paintings, evoking natural elements such as leaves, bird wings and buds. However, Maho Maeda's works are not representations or imitations of nature, but rather personal interpretations of the sounds of nature materialized in a visual form and a concrete medium.
