About the work :

Permanescence N495 is a painting by the Japanese contemporary artist Hachiro Kanno.

Hachiro Kanno's abstract painting endeavours to express the concept of ‘Permanescence’. A neologism made up of the words: ‘permanence’ and ‘essence’; it designates each individual’s unchanging characteristic of that lasts in time and space. Faced with the un-representability of his concept, Hachiro Kanno draws from traditional Japanese calligraphy the motif that embodies ‘Permanescence’. Despite an apparent absence of form, the brightly coloured lines – either red, grey, blue or black, are drawn with a unique gesture. Delicate and vigorous, this gesture is typical of the artist's work, modest whilst keeping its’ essential message.

This artwork is signed and sold unframed.

Coming from a family of traditional calligraphers, Hachiro Kanno paintings are a combination of his oriental heritage and western influences. The artist explores the possibilities of calligraphy, being the foundation to his style, and transforms it into abstract writing, "a writing that has become a painting". Sometimes supple and voluptuous, sometimes tense and controlled, the lines show the gesture's rapidity or, on the other hand, its slowness. With a reduced palette, Hachiro Kanno plays with the contrasts and with others: painted and empty spaces, shadow and light.
