About the work :

Other tomorrows (Berlin) is a drawing made with pierre noire by French contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This drawing is of a Berlin cityscape and a bridge. The German capital is one of the key places for the artist's work as it is where he has a workshop. Although figurative, this black chalk drawing has an unreal and dreamy aspect. The cityscape looks as if it is covered with a fine dark veil made visible by vertical streaks that cover the image and making it less clear, obscuring the atmosphere of this poetic landscape.

From the start, black chalk has always characterized Guy Oberson's work. It is a drawing tool, similar to charcoal, but the blacks are even more matt and deep, and it requires impeccable control as it is irreversible. These landscapes or portraits drawings are always figurative. The artist works using a model or frequently from a photograph, which can be of a model, that of a known photographer or even an image borrowed from the media.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.
