About the work :

No 190 is a painting by contemporary Chinese artist Hongyu Zhang, foam the series 'Portrait', in China ink, acrylic, charcoal and pastel on 3D canvas.

This painting is of a man's face. The face which is at a slight angle takes up nearly the whole composition leaving a margin at the bottom.. This part is comprised of a wide white line, preceded by a thinner black and purple line. The colours of the painting appear on these lines forming a continuity with the portrait. The man is sketched with brisk, rapid strokes and a black geometric shape to the right of the image controls the movement of the face against a light gray background.

The characters HongyuZhang paints are fictional, they are more like self portraits : " All my portraits, it's me" says he. Each stroke constitutes the basic unity : the artist works directly on the floor accompanied by music which helps him find the strength, the rhythm, the movement of each piece. The artist creates an energetic space which draws us in and holds us, inviting us to decipher this tense writing which looks as though it was invented to describe the depths of the soul.

Hongyu Zhang''s painting stems from calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting with a preference for China ink, which he uses together with other mediums : acrylic, pastel and engraving.

His work is signed, unframed.
