About the work :

N°194 is a figurative painting by Chinese contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang.

This figurative artwork is of two men, probably engaged in manual work. It is an exception to Hongyu usual portraits as there is more than one person portrayed, and because the figures are standing. They are also in motion and supplemented with props. However, his technique is still recognizable: the composition is done through the juxtaposition of mediums making the piece’s conception process evidently his. Pastel, Chinese ink, charcoal and acrylic all combine to visibly add a dynamic feel to the still image.

The characters Hongyu Zhang paints are fictional, they are more like self-portraits: " All my portraits, it's me" says he. Each stroke constitutes the basic unity: the artist works directly on the floor accompanied by music which helps him find the strength, the rhythm, the movement of each piece. The artist creates an energetic space which draws us in and holds us, inviting us to decipher this tense writing which looks as though it was invented to describe the depths of the soul.

Hongyu Zhang''s painting stems from calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting with a preference for China ink, which he uses together with other mediums: acrylic, pastel and engraving.

This work is signed and sold unframed.
