About the work :

Cryo X is a photograph from the Cryo series by contemporary photographer Luca Marziale.

In his work Luca Marziale investigates the idea and the definition of landscape. The artist shows micro-landscapes, focusing his attention on the overlooked details of nature. The textures and colors of his photographs, as well as the absence of points of reference in the composition, challenge the viewers perception.

Cryo is a series that explores a unique natural phenomenon that takes place at Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada. The lake releases methane bubbles from the earth into the water, but this process is only visible during a specific and short period of time. In winter, when the temperature drops at -45 degrees Celsius and the lake freezes, the water surrounds, traps and suspends thousands of methane bubbles as ice sculptures. In his photographs, the artist wanted to capture the beauty of nature in transition, despite the harsh and isolating work conditions.

The cuts visible in some images are created by the high winds blowing on the lake’s polished surface and revealing the ice underneath, as if nature itself was painting on a canvas with is paintbrush. The different tones and shades of blue are given by the depth of the water. This ephemeral natural spectacle disappears with the ice, and as the weather begins to warm up again, the bubbles go back into hiding.
