Contemporary sculpture: between revolution and tradition

During an interview in 1967, contemporary sculptor Donald Judd said: “Everything sculpture has, my work doesn’t.” Dropping sculpture’s attributes to release himself of them, Judd’s work has contributed to the definition of the art, even if negative. He based his aesthetics on sculpture’s inability to be significant, only its pure physical being. Sculpture’s main problematic attribute, as practiced for millennia, is the imperative to faithfully represent reality. The artist regrets that contemporary sculpture is not significant in itself, only as a representative reference. If the return to pure forms is an important point for contemporary aesthetic transition in painting and sculpture, the other attributes that Donald Judd wishes to free himself from is the question of materials and indeed, the question of technique.

His artworks are specifically three-dimensional objects with bright industrial colors whose appearance defines neither the material nor the technique. However, despite the philosophical interest of Donald Judd’s aesthetic theory, it does not define the production of contemporary sculpture generally. Many sculptors attach great importance to the technical work of the material used.

Our contemporary sculptures

Jacques Owczarek’s animal sculpture oscillates between abstract and figurative. His geometric pieces represent animals whose pure forms are of particular interest to the sculptor, and for good reason: they seem to impose themselves on him. Indeed, Jacques Owczarek maintains an instinctive relationship with his creation, where freedom and spontaneity are key elements. Animals and bronze sculpture are common points shared by Jacques Owzarek and Pierre Yermia. However, the latter stands out with his animal sculptures that are very slender in appearance. Pierre Yermia’s poetic contemporary sculptures produces a paradoxical impression: the lightness of his animals contrasts with their apparent strength. The artist also creates enigmatic human figures who either standing or sitting, seem to almost levitate.
