Discover Japanese painting and Asian art with Artistics

Asia, and in particular Japan, has fuelled the imagination of the West for centuries. Western interest in Japanese culture, already roused by decorative art object exports such as porcelain in the 18th century, experienced its golden age in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century when the then current art was called ‘Japonism’, which many artists including Van Gogh quickly took up.

He wrote to his brother in 1888: “All my work is slightly Japanese-based”. He was inspired by artists who today are historical Japanese painting influences such as the painter: Hokusai, who’s very famous ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ is characteristic of Japanese art during the Edo era. Nowadays, the Land of the Rising Sun’s delicate aesthetics fascinates more than ever. Manga, Anime and Cosplay are all Japanese cultural aesthetic practices spread worldwide today. Japanese painting remains a dynamic and a versatile field of creativity, as evidenced by the contemporary artists on Artistics.

Japanese Art at Artistics

The contemporary art gallery Artistics has brought together artists of fifteen different nationalities. We invite you to discover these passionate creators whose common trait is originality and a great technical mastery. Amongst our painters, Asia and in particular Japan is well represented. Beyond their nationality, the Japanese artists that we represent are also linked by the delicacy and the spirit that permeates their artistic creations.

Japanese paintings

These artists have gone back to the Japanese artistic codes, whether they work in figurative painting or abstract painting. Hachiro Kanno’s painting is notable for his reworking of ancestral calligraphy techniques he learnt from his family. He rethinks the minute and precise gestures of his ancestors in the light of the poetic -sometimes conceptual- claimed by contemporary art, bringing out abstract forms in his paintings. Hachiro Kanno declines his brushstrokes in various colors and particular movements, all dictated by his concept of Permanescence. Lumi Mizutani also pays homage to her culture through her Japanese paintings. With delicacy, she immortalizes several of Tokyo’s district landscapes such as: Ueno or Bunkyo, refining them using silver and gold leaf. The depiction of nature and the landscape, the fauna, but above all the flora, in particular the cherry blossoms and the plum trees, brings a higher poetic level to her painting.
