Abstract painting’s revolution
For the German painter Paul Klee: "Art does not reproduce the visible, it makes visible". If this statement opposes the traditional imitation of nature held by figurative painting throughout the history of art, it did make sense at the beginning of the 20th century with the advent of abstract art. Painters freed from the demands of realism, created through abstract painting artworks of pure color compositions, shapes and lines. This creative way began in the 19th century with the French impressionist trend, that placed it at a certain distance from the pure imitation of reality. The cubism of Braque and Picasso extends the movement, but it is truly the Russian painter Vassily Kandinsky who appears as the leading figure in abstract painting. Dissociating oneself from evident reality, putting the viewer back in the centre of the search for meaning: abstract painting makes a complete reversal.
