About the work :

Battement d'écume (Foam fluttering) is a drawing made with black chalk by Swiss contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This black chalk drawing is between abstract and figurative. The title qualifies the theme and tends to confirm ambivalence. He invites the spectator to guess at the spectacle of the sea suggested in a poetic way through the depiction of what looks like foam in the waves.

From the start, black chalk has always characterized Guy Oberson's work. It is a drawing tool, similar to charcoal, but the blacks are even more matt and deep, and it requires impeccable control as it is irreversible. These landscapes or portraits drawings are always figurative. The artist works using a model or frequently from a photograph, which can be of a model, that of a known photographer or even an image borrowed from the media.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.
