Landscape photography and aesthetic emotion
For Emile Zola: “The definition of an artwork can only be: an artwork is a part of creation as seen through an attitude”. Except that Nature is also seen through a lens, this definition of art by the famous 20th century French writer corresponds remarkably closely to landscape photography. This recent art form, a contemporary of Emile Zola, is said to be a ‘technical’ art in so far as its rise was due to technical and scientific optical advances. However, the poetical and aesthetics parts are ensured by the artist’s eye and sensitivity as he presses his camera’s shutter release button, taking an image of the world, seizing an echo of the viewed landscapes. The notion of aesthetic emotion that the photographer feels and conveys to a viewer, distinguishes fine art photography from amateur or documentary photography.

French photographer, Xavier Dumoulin is a landscape photography specialist, be it natural or urban. He takes images of natural landscapes where human activity or impact creates an interesting visual contrast. In his ‘Incandescence’ series, awareness and thought come together through images of the artificial light ubiquity that we all live with, even in the heart of the most isolated natural environments.
