Architecture and the arts
Between creation and aesthetic theory, minimalistic art pioneer, Sol Lewitt questioned the relationship of artwork and space. The place gradually granted to art in the public space led him to declare that: “Art is intimately involved with architecture". Indeed, architecture is the definitive example of the relationships between the arts. Painting, with its crucial link to color, plays a fundamental role in architectural compositions. The major influence in architecture of sculpture is obvious: especially when integrated into buildings, sculpture and statues are an integral part of various architectural periods and traditions. Finally, architectural photography should be considered as an interesting ‘mise en abyme’: it is a dialogue between one of the oldest practices in the history of art and the relatively new medium, photography. The two arts constantly bounce off each other in many ways: architectural buildings are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for photography, whilst architectural photography helps to institutionalize this art by focussing on the architectural originality that everyday life sometimes conceals.
Through our artists’ artwork, we invite you to see how architecture is refined through their camera’s lens. Using perspective and light, monuments or interior architecture parts turn images worthy of being paintings. Photographers have multiple techniques to create amazing images with distortion, shift and wide angles.

Our architectural photographs
The photographer Matthieu Venot specializes in architectural photography: the sizes and proportions of the buildings he takes have an imposing visual potential that he takes on instinctively. He produced series of photographs with acidic colors, symmetrical and geometric lines. Endowed with a real visual individuality, the urban photography of Matthieu Venot uses architecture as his primary subject. The artist's images are always characterized by a particular viewpoint: cutting the urban landscape into as several colorful and minimalist vignettes, inviting us to see the city from a new angle.
In a different style, Urbex photographer Gina Soden, winner of several awards, creates an artistic ‘mise en abyme’ in her series of architectural photography. If Matthieu Venot has windows, facades and other balconies in the foreground, Gina Soden makes viewer's look between the walls. She immortalizes abandoned and often inaccessible locations with surprising aesthetics taking us on a journey through time.
