A short history of landscape painting
Figurative paintings have represented natural landscapes, or more recently urban landscapes, throughout the history of art. Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for not only artists, but also for art lovers. So much so that the famous contemporary painter David Hockney assures us: “Of course you can still paint landscape – it’s not been worn out.” Although a landscape has a value in itself as it represents the sometimes elusive beauty of Nature, the fact remains that it is up to the artist to constantly update this theme. If the simple imagery of an ocean’s horizon or an isolated forest isn’t always enough to satisfy the imagination, an artist’s interpretation brings a ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’ that amazes and satisfies the most insensitive tastes amongst us.
Landscape painting has been refreshed throughout the history of art. Aesthetic theories have followed one another, each bringing a new definition to the landscape in painting. The theorist, Leon Battista Alberti helped revolutionize Renaissance painting thanks to the invention of perspective, an invention that Paul Cézanne freed himself from in the 19th century, switching to a less exact interpretation of space during the advent of impressionism. Contemporary painters are full of this cultural and artistic heritage. It is now up to them to continue the tradition in order to prove David Hockney right, as an example, by trying to combine landscape and abstract painting.

Our landscape artists
Spanish artist, Calo Carratala is a landscape painting specialist. In a figurative style, he creates very realistic paintings having the effect of being an open window on the world, calling for contemplation. Starting with the aesthetic ideas he has on location, he amplifies the scenes thanks to a feeling, the raw material in his work, whether he creates small or very large paintings.
The German painter Emanuel Schulze paints landscapes that are a cross between figurative and abstract art. His works are an opening in to imaginary and dreamlike places in which stand architectural figures, turning his paintings in to urban landscapes.
If Calo Carratala paintings create a loss of references in the foreground of the vast Norwegian mountains or a calm in the Amazonian forest, the paintings of Emmanuel Schulze leave the spectator pleasantly disoriented in time and space.
