Contemporary photography: creative freedom

For the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, “Photography has not changed since its origin…”. The legendary street photographer is no doubt referring to the essence of his art, namely, capturing a fleeting moment and immortalizing it through the use of light. However, it is important to note that the technical quality of cameras, post-production tools, and printing techniques continue to develop, giving artists greater creative possibilities in the field of contemporary photography.

Photography does not allow itself to be confined to a moment in history or a style, and with good reason: not only is it a recent art form but also, the linear conception of history is difficult to apply to this medium. Therefore, contemporary photography can be considered the champion of resolute creative freedom.

The contemporary photographers featured by the gallery

Their art knows no boundaries of space and time. Contemporary photographers enjoy the freedom to create anywhere and at any time. They are governed only by their inspiration! However, these artists sometimes share the same themes and concerns. Nature and its landscapes are at the heart of the contemporary photography of Xavier Dumoulin and Bernhard Lang, although their artistic styles differ. Xavier Dumoulin takes an authentic look at the urban and natural spaces that he photographs. The artist likes to capture raw images, inviting the viewer to confront the literality of landscapes, sometimes as a way of criticizing how they have been neglected. In particular, his Night Passenger series displays an aesthetic aimed at inciting awareness of light pollution, a real environmental issue. The contemporary photography of Bernhard Lang deals with nature in a totally different manner. Initially, the German artist seeks to arouse surprise and wonder. His aerial views, which at first glance can be interpreted as abstract paintings, captivate his viewers with their vibrant colors and very graphic appearance. However, environmental awareness is not absent in his work. This is because, after capturing the viewer’s attention with their undeniably aesthetic qualities, Bernhard’s photographs incite us to consider, often with a certain degree of shock, the destructive impact of human activities on nature.
