About the work :

Arbre fragment 1 (Tree Fragment 1) is a black chalk drawing by the Swiss contemporary artist, Guy Oberson.

In the centre of this landscape is a tree in amongst others that are either smaller or further way - a thin broken branch adds a disruptive element to the composition. Although figurative, this black chalk drawing has an unreal and dreamy aspect. The landscape appears to be covered in a fine dark veil made visible by vertical streaks covering the image, making the subjects less visible and obscuring the atmosphere in this poetic landscape.

From the start, black chalk has always characterized Guy Oberson's work. It is a drawing tool, similar to charcoal, but the blacks are even more matt and deep, and it requires impeccable control as it is irreversible. These landscapes or portraits drawings are always figurative. The artist works using a model or frequently from a photograph, which can be of a model, that of a known photographer or even an image borrowed from the media.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.

This artwork is sold unframed.
