About the work :

Aerial Views, Phosphate Mining 01 is a photograph by German contemporary artist Bernhard Lang.

This picture is taken from the 'Phosphate Mining' series photographed over the open-pit phosphate mines in Bone Valley, Florida. This is where the greatest concentration of phosphate is to be found in the USA. Phosphate is used for producing fertilizers for agriculture and is largely exported, primarily to China. Because this substance is radioactive, it has a disastrous impact on the environment. Bernhard Lang has captured images from high above and in so doing, shows us the extent to which giant diggers swallow more and more of the landscape.

Between landscape photography and abstract, this series perfectly illustrates Bernhard Lang's approach: his work seeks to provoke a concern for the environment while providing visual pleasure. Because even if, initially, the very graphic compositions of the 'Phosphate Mining' series are eye-catching, they also show the extent of the industrial activity and its brutal consequences on the environment.

The real strength of Bernhard Lang's work lies in this ambivalence. He has been steadily traveling the world since 2010 in the search of landscapes extremely marked by man, that he photographs from a vertical point of view, from an ultralight aircraft or helicopter.

Prints of Bernhard Lang's photographs are sold in limited edition.

This picture from the 'Phosphate Mining' series is available in 3 different formats :
