About the work :

Aerial Views, Coal Mine 7 is a photograph by German contemporary artist Bernhard Lang.

It is taken from the 'Coal Mine' series photographed from above the Hambach mine in North-Rhine Westphalia, (Germany). This open pit mine with an area of 85km2 going as deep as 293m below sea level, extracts 240 000 tons of lignite every day. After the tragic catastrophe at Fukushima, Germany announced its withdrawal from Nuclear power, which meant an increase in the need for lignite, "brown coal", considered the worst form of energy in terms of CO2 emissions.

For Bernhard Lang, who photographed the Hambach mine in May 2014, these aerial shots were a terrific way of measuring the extent of the dig. « To see these humongous machines swallowing the arid landscape reminded me of extraterrestrial planets in sci-fi films (…) This image is a veritable illustration of man's impact on the earth. »

Between landscape photography and abstract, this series perfectly illustrates Bernhard Lang's approach : clearly part of the contemporary art movement, his work seeks to provoke a concern for the environment while providing visual pleasure. Because even if, initially, the very graphic compositions of the "Coal Mine" series are eye-catching, they also show the extent of the industrial activity and its heavy consequences on the environment.

The real strength of Bernhard Lang's work lies in this ambivalence. He has been steadily traveling the world since 2010 in the search of landscapes extremely marked by man, that he photographs from a vertical point of view, from an ultralight aircraft or helicopter.

Prints of Bernhard Lang's photographs are for sale in limited edition.
